Wolong Nature Reserve is not a tourist park or tourist place that visitors can buy tickets and visit. It is a big area of protected nature reserve located in Wolong and Gengda in Wenchuan County in Aba (Ngawa) Prefecture by the east of Qionglaishan Range with elevation between 1200m and 6200m. Within the reserve live wildlife including giant panda, golden snub-nose monkeys, takins, red pandas, snow leopards, himalayan wolves and other 400 different species. The Wolong Panda Base is located inside this reserve and it is open for visitors.

Wolong Panda Base is located in Genda town, 100km west to the city of Chengdu that by driving it takes 1.5 hours. The other parts of Wolong Nature Reserve often doesn’t allow any visiting, hiking, photography activities except some lower parts are open including several places by Wolong and Balang.
There is one main road that goes through the Wolong Nature Reserve to over Balang and to four sister mountain. This road is often busy. The access by road into the reserve to the side valleys is very limited and often needs to go by foot and it is usually very steep and hard walking up the mountains.
December to February has higher chance of seeing golden snub-nose monkeys. Late March to April is good to search for wild pandas in Wolong Nature Reserve. All seasons are good to see birds that May to June is usually considered to be the best seasons.
Captive pandas live by two places, one by Hetaoping Panda Base that now mainly used as a research base and doesn’t allow any visitors. The other is Huangcaoping Panda Base (Wolong Panda Base) that allows visitors to visit all seasons.

Wild Panda number counts to around 150 in total from the 2021 estimate. Wolong has one of the most difficult terrain but also has high density of wild pandas. The chance of seeing a wild panda here is in comparison higher than many other wild panda places even though it’s still low but higher than other places.
