Day01 Chengdu - Yaan: Labahe Hiking

This is a gound tour. Please remember to have a day pack with you to take necessary items for each day's visit, sometimes including packed lunch or snacks for yourself, drinking water recommended 1L minimum, sunglasses, rainproof, warm-keeping clothes and hat, sun block and lip oil, etc.

Start from Chengdu city by 9am we will drive first into the Qionglaishan Range where it is one of the natural home of Giant Panda. Qionglaishan Range is with mountainous terrain and dense forests. We will arrive by the deep mountains of Qionglaishan between Yaan and Garze at Labahe, a nature reserve of Giant Pandas and other wildlife including red pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, Sichuan takin, samber deer, various birds. After we arrive Labahe in the afternoon we will start our hiking from near the waterfall to Deer Pond for around 4km following the river with leisure pace. The river and forest views are beautiful in different seasons.

This is our first day of hiking we shall have sufficient time to walk at a comfortable pace to slowly orient ourselves. After the hiking we shall check in to our hotel that is located inside the park of Labahe in the complete nature. We shall have chance to spot samber deer by late afternoon or evening. Spotlighting(night tour to spot wildlife) is available in certain seasons.

Total driving 3-4h, total walking 4km, easy pace;

Overnight altitude at 1900m, highest altitude at 2000m.

Day02 Labahe Reserve Hiking

Today is a full day hiking Labahe Reserve to its higher and core areas.

We will start from our hotel after breakfast and go to the tourist bus station by using the park tourist park to go to the higher part of Labahe after 8am. Arrive at the higher part by the cable car station at around 2700m we will then start our hiking down from there on the road in nature. Animal lovers may consider to walk around the bus terminal and stay around for longer time for high chance of sighting Red Pandas in the season of August to February, or May to June.

Optionally we may consider to use the cable car to go up to the top of mountain called Jiaoshan. In some seasons the cable car may involve long time waiting due to not enough people so may need to wait til a cable car is full. After the cable car we will arrive the top of the mountains at 3500m and from there it is around 2km walking up to 3750m by the very end of paved boardwalk. The walking on this part above 3500m can be strenuous due to higher altitude. Although in good weather days the views are amazing that one can often see cloud below you and more mountains sometimes covered in snow. In spring season in April, May and June there is a high chance of spotting Chinese Monal at this altitude. After this part of hiking go back the same way and use cable car to go down the mountain. From the cable car it is also a great place for spotting wildlife since it’s in a higher position over the canopies and trees.

From the upper bus terminal walking down will involve walking on road for some part but mostly will be quiet and scenic. The highlight part is the “Panda Trail” that goes in to the forest and include the Red Rock trail in to the valley. This part of hiking is mainly on unpaved road and plank or boardwalk with normally no people and complete wild forest and valley views with chance of spotting Red Panda, Lady Amherst's pheasant, Tibetan Macaque, Samber Deer and also chance of Sichuan Takin and other forest and bush birds.

Today’s walking is also flexible that the lower part of the hiking is skippable if one chooses to also include the Jianshan hiking (the higher part hiking). After the hiking we will then drive out of the reserve and continue drive for around 2 hours to the Yaan City and stay there for the night.

Total driving 2h, total walking 12+km, moderate pace;

Overnight altitude at 500m, highest altitude at 2700m (optional to 3750m).

Wawu is one of the lower mountains in Qionglaishan Range in Yaan as part of the Giant Panda Reserve of China and a popular tourist place in Sichuan near Chengdu. Mt. Wawu is renowned as "Pearl in the Green World". Wawu means table mountain or Flat-top mountain, with ever running streams and long waterfalls, lush forests and seasonal different views. Mt. Wawu is one of the best places to watch Red Pandas in real wild conditions. The tourist highlights of Wawu include Yanv Lake, Zhengjue Temple, Yuanyang Pond, etc. It is a well-established tourist park with cable cars and tourist buses available to the summit.

In the morning we will start from hotel and go to the entrance and check in. During certain seasons the park can be crowded especially in summer time in July and August. There may be long queues of getting in to the park but usually the cable car is not very crowded. We will start by around 8:30am (or 9am) in winter and use 2 sections of cable cars to the summit at around 2700m by elevation. From the cable car terminal we shall arrive the very top on the “Flat Roof”, from there we will start our walking on a circuit trail for total around 5km in forest. In the morning we will start from our hotel after breakfast and drive for around 30 minutes to Yaan Bifengxia Panda Base for today’s trip. Yaan Bifengxia Panda Base is one of the 6 panda bases in/around the city of Chengdu. Bifengxia means Gorge of Green Hills, it is also a tourist attraction that has gorge and waterfall scenery that share the same natural environment with the panda base itself. Bifengxia Panda Base is home to around 30 to 40 pandas in total. It is a less-touristy panda base comparing to the other ones near the city of Chengdu. We will spend 2-3 hours watching the pandas and panda cubs by the panda base in Bifengxia and then check out the panda base and do the hiking of Bifeng Gorge. The walking is on paved stairs for total around 7km to finish the circuit trail with views of waterfalls, small rivers, cliffs and forests. Bifeng Gorge is a typical landscape of subtropical rainforest in China. The stairs are not steep but can be damp. Day05 Wolong Nature Reserve Hiking - back to Chengdu

Today we will do hiking in Wolong Nature Reserve. We will first start by our hotel in Dujiangyan and drive for around 1 hour to the base of the reserve in the village and may need to switch to a local transfer to go up the mountain. The hiking is on very steep terrain above the river gorge in the forest with chance of seeing different birds. If you are keen to go deeper into the forest then better to start earlier by 7am from hotel so to have more time for walking up from 2250m to the top by 3000m and back the same way in total 10km hiking. the views are great and sometimes misty. This hiking by the end will have a low probability of sighting red pandas and traces of giant pandas have also been found by the top of the hiking trails. The walking up is steep recommend to use walking poles.

You may choose to do the easier version of this hike by Ganhaizi with total distance of 8km from 2300m to 2700m and back the same way. This easier alternative is less steep and demanding but comparing to the first option it doesn’t get you very close to the usual panda playing/living locations.
