Barkam (also spelled Maerkang) is a county-level city in Sichuan, China. It serves as the capital of the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and is the cultural center of Jiarong Tibet (same as the Jiarongs in Siguniang and Danba). The name "Barkam" comes from the Tibetan bar khams, meaning "place of strong fire" and, by extension, "place of prosperity". The city is located on the southern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, about 365 kilometers northwest of Chengdu. It sits at an elevation of about 2600m. (It shares the same name with a city in east TAR “Barkam” namely Mangkang. These are two different places).
