Songpan ices are mainly located in the Minshan Range west approach. There are multiple valleys with different access to different levels of ices from WI3 to WI4. Songpan is quickly accessed by fast train from Chengdu in 2 hours time.
From mid/late December to the next mid February.
No permits are required to do ice climbs here but may need to pay to local village for access. Some villages have established lodges for mountain climbers in mountain season but the ice season usually see less people.
Please be aware of the high altitude of above 3000m of most of the ices in Songpan. If you can carry and go further to the valleys then you may have ice that haven’t been climbed and have the ice just for yourself.
