Mount Kawalori, standing at 5,992 meters above sea level, it is the main peak of the Gongkala mountain range within the Hengduan Mountains system and the second-highest peak in the northern Kham region. Its summit is perpetually covered with snow and ice, with sparkling glaciers and undulating, majestic horn peaks that stretch far into the distance. Mt. Kawalori can be seen from Luoge Liangzi, Garzê County town, and most stretches of the G317 highway in this area. It is the tallest and most prominent mountain in the Garzê region. In local culture, it is regarded as the "God of Wealth Mountain."
It is situated within Dage Township, Xinlong County, Garzê Prefecture, Sichuan Province, approximately 90 kilometers from the county seat. It also serves as the boundary mountain between Xinlong County and Garzê County.
Kawalori is a renowned sacred mountain in Tibetan culture, venerated by both the Bön religion and Tibetan Buddhism. Its mountain deity is believed to be Yungdrung Dadje (also known as Yongzhong Daojie), the God of Wealth among the thirteen major deities of Bön. For this reason, the mountain is also called the "God of Wealth Mountain." Its pass is known as "Ziyong Qionggo," meaning "Gate of Wealth," and it is said that circumambulating or paying homage to this mountain brings good fortune and prosperity. Every year on the 15th day of the fourth month in the Tibetan calendar, numerous devotees gather here to hold ritual ceremonies.
At the foot of the snowy peak southface, two alpine lakes—each 800 meters long and 300 meters wide—have formed from melting snow and ice. These lakes perfectly mirror the snow mountain and blue sky, making them an ideal spot for photographing mountain reflections.
Trekking is a good way to explore this less-known mountain in Sichuan Highland.
