Dajin Monastery (also known as Dargyä Monastery) is also located in Ganzi County of Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is closely connected to the Beri Monastery—they are both monasteries among the "Thirteen Huo’er Monasteries" of the Gelugpa sect, they were also historically involved in the famous "Dabai Conflict" (the Dajin-Baili dispute).
Dajin Monastery under the Foothill of Gangga Mountains
Dajin Monastery is situated on a hillock on the north side of National Highway G317, in Kagong Township, Garzê County, about 28 kilometers from the county downtown. Its full name means "Auspicious Land of Prosperity and Flourishing," and it is commonly referred to as "Xingwang Temple" (Prosperity Temple). The monastery was first established over 600 years ago and was relocated to its current site in the first year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1662 CE) by Hor Chokyi Ngawang Phuntsok. It is now a protected cultural relic site of Garzê Prefecture.
Architectural Features: The main hall is modeled after the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa. It is a reinforced concrete structure with a base floor and three upper stories, blending Han and Tibetan architectural arts. Its red-and-white appearance is both solemn and magnificent. At its peak, the monastery housed over 3,000 monks; today, it has approximately 200 working monks and nuns.
During the Qing Dynasty, Dajin Monastery was renowned for its large number of warrior monks and its substantial financial resources, with some lamas specifically engaged in trade in Kangding, Chamdo, Lhasa, and elsewhere. In 1931, it engaged in the famous "Dajin Conflict" with Beri Monastery over sectarian and territorial disputes. The current structures were rebuilt in the 1980s after being destroyed in 1967.
Every year in July and August, the monastery hosts the "Shuabaizi" (tent festival) featuring Tibetan opera, horse racing, and Guozhuang circle dancing; in June, there is also a circumambulation ritual around the sacred mountain.
