Shengxian Valley (Derge Shengxiangou)

Dege Shengxian Valley, also known as the Que'er Mountain Shengxian Valley Scenic Area. Renowned for its waterfalls, spiritual retreat culture, and convenient accessibility, Shengxian Valley beautifully combines natural wonders with a rich cultural atmosphere that was recently being developed into a semi-tourist place (though few go there). If you're looking for a hidden gem along National Highway 317 that's easy to reach yet offers spectacular scenery and authentic Tibetan culture, this is a good detour for you.

Location and Getting There

Shengxian Valley is located in Derge County, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Specifically, it lies within Keluodong Township, right next to National Highway 317 with driving about 10min to get to from G317, about 35 kilometers from Dege County town.

The road conditions are excellent(usually if not damaged by rockslides) and easily accessible: the entire route inside the scenic area is paved asphalt with good conditions. For those who prefer not to hike, you can drive directly to the foot of big waterfall. If you're up for more exploration, the valley stretches about 5 kilometers with some elevation gain, and possible hiking after the Buddhist shrine.

Highlights

Spectacular Cliff-Hanging Waterfall: The centerpiece of the scenic area is the massive waterfall cascading down towering, bluish-gray smooth rock faces. The water comes down with force, creating clouds of mist that, under sunlight, often produce rainbows—a truly visually stunning spectacle.

A Spiritual Retreat: This place has been a meditation and retreat site for Tibetan Buddhist masters since ancient times. Legend has it that great figures like Thangtong Gyalpo once practiced here. At the top of the waterfall and along the valley, you can spot small red wooden huts dedicated to spiritual practitioners, adding profound cultural depth to the landscape. Please remain respectful and quiet during your visit.

Diverse Landscape Along the Way: From pastoral nomad homes and babbling streams at the valley mouth, to striking rock formations and the magnificent waterfall deeper in, and finally to sweeping views of the snow-capped peaks on the southern slope of Dzogchen Snow Mountain in the distance—the scenery transforms constantly, offering a rich variety of vistas.

Planning & Travel Season

This place is usually recommended as a detour on a bigger tour between Ganzi and Derge or West Sichuan. it is accessible by car so it’s friendly for those prefer not hiking too. A recommended visit duration ranges from 1 hour to half a day. You can follow the road deeper into the valley to admire the waterfall and the meditation huts. Please note the high altitude (the highest point reaches about 4,400 meters) and take precautions against altitude sickness
