Nyenpo Yurtse Travel Guide

Nyenpo Yurtse is also called Nianbao Yuze, a geological park with dozens of beautiful lakes and amazing mountains. Nyenpo Yurtse is located 620km north west to Chengdu and 600km south to Xining at the border between Sichuan and Qinghai Province at Suohu Rima Xiang in Golog Prefecture of Qinghai. It is believed by local Golog Tibetans to be their origin place and a glory of the King Gesar. The highest point of Nyenpo Yurtse is 5369 meters above sea level and it is also the highest point of Bayan Har Mountains, the separation of Yangtze and Yellow River in China. Nyenpo Yurtse covers an area of 8spkm and is called “the rock mountains” by local Tibetan people. It was listed as a national geological park due to its uniquely-formed mountains and rocks. The altitude of Nyenpo Yurtse is over 4000 meters and the number of lakes is believed to be over 300 including the big ones Ximen Co, Rigan Co, etc.Update: Nyenpo Yurtse is closed for visitors from 2018 in Qinghai Province. All camping and hiking are banned from local authority due to environment reasons in Qinghai Province. Travelers planning going there please be aware of this. You may be told to turn back when you try to go in from Qinghai Province (north and west). However camping and hiking are available in Sichuan Province from east and south entrances.

Nyenpo Yurtse is one of the least explore places in Tibet located far from any big cities in China. The unique rock mountains and the many lakes, along with the Golog Tibetan yak ranches have become one of the most beautiful expeditions in Tibet. Hiking

The high point of Nyenpo Yurtse is also called Mt. Nyenpo Yurtse. It is 5369 meters above sea level and it is a low technical mountain. There are also many beautiful rocks and walls have never been climbed before.

Getting There and Around

Go to Nyenpo Yurtse By Bus

There is no direct bus from Chengdu to Nyenpo Yurtse. One needs to transit from Aba Xian. From Chengdu to Aba Xian first you get on the bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station at 6.20am and 6.50am. These two buses will cost 164 yuan and take you from Chengdu to Aba Xian in 10 hours. From Aba Xian you need to use the local bus to get to Jiuzhi Xian which will take another 1.5 hours. From Jiuzhi Xian you either take the bus to Dawu and get off bus at Nyenpo Yurtse or to rent a car to get there. This part will take about 1 hour..

Travel Season

June and July are the flower season of Nyenpo Yurtse when the land is covered with the yellow blooming flowers. However this is also the monsoon season here. The seasons good for travel is from May to October when it is not too cold. July and August are the warmest time of the year in Nyenppo Yurtse. A drier time would September and October when the weather becomes stable.

Accommodation and Food

There is only basic accommodation available at Nyenpo Yurtse. The guesthouse available at near the park are basic bunks without attached bathroom nor hot water for shower. If you are looking for comfortable accommodations, you need to drive back to Jiuzhi Xian or Aba Xian where you can find hotels with modern facilities. Food is also limited but simple shops are available.

The best way to travel to Nyenpo Yurtse is probably an overlanding trip between Xining and Chengdu. But it will require at least 2 weeks to see everything along the way. A trip to Nyenpo Yurtse will require a minimum of 4 days from and back to Chengdu. The best way is to do a hiking trip there.
