Sichuan Mountain Climbing Fees | Sichuan Mountaineering Cost

Climbing trip in Sichuan involves services of transfers, translator, food, climbing permits, environment protection fees, obligated liaison officer, porters and pack horses, accommodations, local guides.

The items obligated by authority are:

• Climbing permits [climbing without this you are actually breaking laws in China];
• Liaison officer [this is assigned by Sichuan Mountaineering Association and an L/O usually doesn't speak English];
• Environment protection fees;
• Sometimes when the climb is in a park or nature reserve there are also camping fees and admission fees involved.

The services that you can choose are: (these are not obligated but in practice, companies don't sell climbing permits alone. )

• Transfers [can either be a private transfer or a public transfer];
• Translators [very helpful if you don't speak Chinese];
• Food;
• Porters and pack horses;
• Accommodations;
• Local guides;
• Gears.

You will need at least a translator, a local guide to take you to the base and to get around. You can cut down cost by using more economy hotels and public transport instead of private transport, save cost on porter by carrying stuff on your own, taking care of your own food, etc

Years ago this business was completely controlled by government and by then you had to use their full package of what's listed above, with standard regulated and not negotiable. By now it's still half-controled by the authority but you get to choose level of services you want and cut off things you don't need.
