Songpan Old Town

Songpan Old Town is a historical outpost of military base in ancient China since Tang Dynasty and played an important role in the relation with traditional Tibet kingdoms. It is located in the north of Aba Prefecture and has an old name of Songzhou. Songpan is historically on the borderland of traditional Tibet and traditional Chinese Areas and has long been a place of warfare and conflicts due to its critical location. Nowadays it is a main tourist site on a ground tour to Jiuzhaigou from Chengdu.

Songpan Old Town is located 100km south to the park of Jiuzhagou, 40km southwest to the park of Huanglong, 35km south to the airport of Jiuzhaigou. It is mainly and Chinese Hui Muslin town. The total city wall of Songpan is 6.2km and with a height of 12.5m. The current city wall was built in Ming Dynasty but largely renovated in modern times due to development of tourism. Within the old town it is not as touristy as one may think. The old town itself is largely used as a normal living area for local people. You may see shops, restaurants that are catering to largely to local people instead of tourists except the ones that are outside by the roads.
